Owing to their ability to resist extreme temperatures, and their moisture repelling qualities, silicone rubber gaskets are commonly used in adhesives, sealants, medical applications, cookware, insulation and lubricants.
Some of silicone's properties include low toxicity, thermal stability, water repelling, resistance to sunlight and oxygen, non-stick and electrical insulation.
Different types of silicone gaskets include solid gaskets, sponge gaskets, foam gaskets and injection moulding gaskets.
Silicone rubber is a polymer made from chemical elements including oxygen, hydrogen and silicone.
Solid silicone rubber gaskets are commonly used on metal closures, whereas silicone sponge gaskets are used from environment seals. Silicone performs extremely well under UV light and is stable over a broad temperature range. Silicone foam gaskets and seals are similar to silicone sponge. The cell structure, however, is closed, in contrast to sponge, which has an open cell structure.
Open cells are used for dust seals or shock gaskets and closed cells are used for environmental seals.
